Clinton chooses Gore: After weeks of meetings with his team of advisors discussing his possible running mates, Clinton decides on Tennessee Senator Albert Gore, Jr., a young, liberal "policy wonk'' similar in many ways to Clinton. Gore had made an unsuccessful bid for the presidential nomination himself in 1988. Clinton calls Gore from the mansion after 11:00 P.M. to give him the news.
